Pittosporum 'Bannow Bay' is an evergreen shrub with a compact, rounded habit, making it a popular choice for smaller gardens and mixed borders. Its small, wavy-edged leaves are a glossy dark green, often tinged with purple-black new growth, providing year-round interest and a dense, bushy structure. The foliage creates an attractive backdrop throughout the seasons, offering good contrast against lighter coloured plants. In late spring, small, honey-scented, dark maroon flowers appear, though they are often hidden among the foliage and are more valued for their fragrance than visual display. These flowers can attract pollinating insects, offering some benefit to garden wildlife. This shrub is well suited to coastal gardens, as it tolerates salt-laden winds and exposed conditions with ease. It also performs well in a range of soil types, including loamy and well-drained soils, making it a versatile addition to many garden settings. Its dense growth habit makes it useful for low hedging or as a structural shrub within a border, and its compact size means it requires minimal pruning to maintain a neat appearance.
