Pomegranate is a deciduous fruit tree, grown here as a multistem specimen with several trunks rising from the base to form an open, spreading habit. The foliage is glossy and narrow, emerging with a bronze tint in spring before maturing to mid-green, then turning yellow in autumn before leaf fall. In early summer, the tree bears striking funnel-shaped flowers in vivid orange-red, with crumpled, tissue-like petals set against the glossy leaves. These are followed in autumn by rounded fruits that ripen to a deep red or orange-red skin, splitting when fully mature to reveal clusters of juicy, jewel-like seeds. The combination of bright flowers in summer and colourful fruit in autumn gives the tree interest across two seasons. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, making this a useful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden. Pomegranate thrives best in a warm, sheltered, sunny position, making it well suited to south-facing walls or sheltered courtyards, and it performs well in free-draining soils. Its multistem form adds structural character to a planting scheme, working well as a feature tree in a border or large container, combining ornamental appeal with edible fruit production.
