Populus nigra 'Italica', or Lombardy Poplar, is a fastigiate mutation of male black poplar. It’s large, vigorous, deciduous tree of narrowly columnar habit, straight trunk, ascending branches and grey-green bark that matures into grooved, black bark. Diamond-shaped to triangular, bright green leaves, turn yellow in autumn. Reddish male catkins appear in spring before the leaves emerge. Populus nigra 'Italica' is easily grown in fertile, hummus-rich, moist and well-drained soils, but it can adapt to a wide range of soils, especially wet, as it can withstand flooding. It prefers full sun. It is resistant to frost, winds, coastal conditions, de-icing salt, and urban pollution. Low maintenance plant. This elegant-looking tree is best used for windbreaks, screens, or along the roads. It is suitable for urban and industrial areas but can cause certain problems. Its branches are easily broken and may cause damage. Shallow, vigorous roots may lift sidewalks, damage drainage systems or house foundations.
