Prunus lusitanica 'Angustifolia' is an elegant evergreen tree, particularly effective when grown as a standard. Its neat, upright form produces a well-defined head of glossy, dark green leaves, creating year-round structure and interest. The narrow leaves and attractive reddish young stems give this Portuguese Laurel a refined appearance, making it an excellent choice for formal and contemporary gardens.
In early summer, clusters of small, fragrant white flowers appear among the foliage, providing valuable nectar for bees and other pollinating insects. These are followed by small red fruits that mature to dark purple or black, adding further seasonal interest.
As a standard tree, 'Angustifolia' is particularly useful for framing entrances, lining paths, defining terraces or adding height to borders without taking up excessive ground space. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils and will grow in sun or partial shade, although a sheltered, well-drained position is preferable.
