Prunus ‘Shirofugen’, or Cherry 'Shirofugen', is a small, vigorous, deciduous, late-flowering cherry tree of spreading, vase-shaped habit and flattened crown. Its long, toothed, mid- green leaves are bronze when young, and orange and scarlet red in autumn. Large, fragrant, pure white to deep pink, double flowers, opening from pink buds, hang in clusters from long stalks and bloom in May and June. Prunus ‘Shirofugen’ prefers moderately fertile, deep, loamy, moist, well-drained soils, but is adaptable to other types of soil, except shallow chalk or too wet and waterlogged soils. It thrives in full sun. Very resistant to frost but needs to be sheltered from harsh winds. As a late-bloomer, flower buds are less likely to be damaged by late frosts. Tolerant of air pollution, therefore, suitable for growing in cities. Low maintenance-plant, doesn’t require much pruning. Cherry 'Fugenzō' is an unusual and attractive ornamental cherry. Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage, urban, and Japanese-style gardens. Excellent for urban areas.
