Yacht Rock Rose (Rhaphiolepis umbellata) is a dense, evergreen shrub with a rounded, compact habit, making it a reliable choice for structured planting schemes and low hedging. Its leathery, dark green leaves are leathery and oval in shape, providing a glossy backdrop throughout the year regardless of season. In late spring and early summer, the shrub produces clusters of fragrant white flowers, borne in rounded umbels at the branch tips. These blooms give way in autumn to small, blue-black berries that persist into the colder months, adding further seasonal interest. The combination of flowers followed by fruit extends the shrub's period of visual appeal across several seasons. The flowers attract pollinating insects such as bees, while the berries provide a food source for birds during autumn and winter, giving this shrub some value for garden wildlife. Its dense, evergreen foliage also offers shelter for small creatures throughout the year. This shrub is well suited to coastal gardens, as it tolerates salt-laden winds and exposed positions with ease. It also performs well in a range of soil types, including loamy and well-drained conditions, making it a versatile addition to mixed borders, informal hedging, or as a specimen shrub in sheltered or exposed garden settings alike.
