The Rhododendron ‘Blue Diamond’ is a captivating evergreen shrub prized for its compact form and vibrant blooms. This small, bushy plant belongs to the dwarf rhododendron group, making it ideal for smaller gardens, rockeries, and container planting. It typically reaches a mature height of 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) and spreads to around 60–90 cm (2–3 feet), forming a tidy, rounded shape.
One of its most striking features is its profusion of small, bell-shaped flowers that emerge in spring. These blossoms are a deep, vivid blue-violet, creating an eye-catching display that contrasts beautifully against the plant’s dense, dark green foliage. The leaves are small, narrow, and slightly glossy, adding to the overall decorative appeal even outside of its flowering season.
‘Blue Diamond’ thrives best in acidic, well-drained soils and prefers a position with dappled shade or partial sunlight. While it enjoys some sun, it should be protected from intense afternoon heat and drying winds to prevent damage. Regular mulching with organic matter helps maintain soil moisture and acidity.
This rhododendron is relatively hardy, tolerating temperatures down to approximately -15°C, but it benefits from shelter in particularly exposed or frosty areas. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance, with light pruning after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage new growth.
Ideal for borders, mixed shrub plantings, or standalone displays, Rhododendron ‘Blue Diamond’ adds year-round structure and a burst of springtime colour to any garden. Its versatility and reliable flowering make it a favourite among gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet strikingly beautiful shrub. Pair it with other acid-loving plants, such as azaleas or heathers, for a harmonious, naturalistic effect.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us
During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.
What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
