Rosa canina, or Dog Rose, is a vigorous, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with arching, thorny stems, toothed, green leaves, and lightly fragrant, 5-petal, white to pink flowers, blooming solitary or in clusters in June and July. Flowers are followed by the abundance of glossy, red, berry-like fruits that persist on braches for several months. Dog Rose thrives in fertile, moist, hummus-rich soil, but is tolerant of other types of soil, even poor ones, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers full sun, but can grow in partial shade. It is resistant to frost. A tough and undemanding plant, very easy to grow. Require some pruning to maintain its shape. Rosa canina is a great wildlife plant, perfect for informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens. It is attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds, and great shelter for birds and small mammals. It makes excellent informal hedges or screens because of its density and fast growth. Great for beds and borders.
