Sweetgum 'Worplesdon' is a deciduous tree, grown here as a full standard with a single clear stem supporting a well-shaped crown. The foliage consists of deeply cut, star-shaped leaves with five to seven pointed lobes, giving the tree a distinctive maple-like appearance throughout the growing season. In autumn, the leaves turn through a striking sequence of orange, red, purple and yellow, often holding several colours at once on the same tree, making this the season of greatest ornamental value. The bark develops a corky, ridged texture with age, adding winter interest once the leaves have fallen. This cultivar is noted for its reliable and vivid autumn colour compared to the species, making it a popular choice for specimen planting where seasonal display is a priority. As a full standard, it suits use as a feature tree in lawns, parks or larger garden settings where its height and spread can be appreciated. The tree performs well on a range of soil types, including heavier clay soils, provided drainage is adequate, and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. It is a sound choice for parkland, avenue planting or as a focal point in open garden spaces.
