Syringa vulgaris 'Violetta' is a beautiful cultivar of the classic lilac, Syringa vulgaris, valued for its richly coloured blooms, strong fragrance and reliable spring performance. This deciduous shrub is a popular choice for traditional gardens, cottage-style borders and informal hedging, where its vibrant flowers provide a striking seasonal display.

Flowering typically occurs in mid to late spring in the UK, often during May. At this time the plant produces large, upright clusters of blossoms known as panicles. The flowers are a deep violet-purple, giving the cultivar its name, and they stand out vividly against the fresh green foliage. Each small tubular bloom opens from darker buds, creating depth and variation within the flower clusters. The panicles can reach up to 20 centimetres in length and are carried proudly above the leaves, creating an impressive visual effect when the shrub is in full bloom.

One of the most appealing qualities of ‘Violetta’ is its powerful and classic lilac fragrance. The flowers release a sweet, rich scent that drifts through the garden on warm spring days. This perfume is highly attractive to pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies, making the shrub both ornamental and beneficial for wildlife. The blooms are also excellent for cutting and are often used in fragrant indoor arrangements.

The plant itself forms a vigorous, upright shrub with a broad, rounded habit. Over time it typically reaches a height of three to four metres with a similar spread. The leaves are heart-shaped, mid-green and appear in early spring, providing a dense backdrop that highlights the colourful flowers.

‘Violetta’ thrives best in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Like most lilacs, it prefers neutral to slightly alkaline conditions and good air circulation. Pruning should be carried out shortly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage strong flowering the following year.

With its vivid violet blooms, traditional fragrance and dependable growth, Syringa vulgaris ‘Violetta’ remains a classic and rewarding addition to many garden settings.
