Acer palmatum 'Viridis' is a deciduous Japanese maple, trained here as a half standard tree with a clear stem topped by a rounded, weeping canopy. The finely divided, palmate leaves emerge bright green in spring and remain green through summer, developing shades of gold and orange in autumn before leaf fall. The foliage has a delicate, lacy texture due to the deeply cut leaf lobes, giving the canopy a light and airy appearance. Small reddish-purple flowers appear in spring, followed by the characteristic winged seed pairs (samaras) later in the season, though neither are a significant ornamental feature compared to the foliage. The weeping, cascading form of the canopy provides year-round structural interest, particularly when underplanted or used as a specimen tree. This maple benefits from a sheltered position away from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. It performs well in moist, well-drained soil and tolerates partial shade, making it a versatile choice for a woodland-style planting scheme or as a focal point within a border.

Rose ‘Giallo Sfumato’ grown as a standard (tree) rose is a refined and eye-catching feature, offering softly blended yellow blooms with subtle tonal variations held above a clear stem. This elevated form creates a graceful focal point, adding height, structure, and seasonal colour to any garden setting.

It is particularly well suited to formal gardens, courtyard spaces, and patios where its elegant flower colour can be appreciated at eye level. When planted in pairs, it creates a balanced and decorative framing effect for entrances, pathways, or seating areas, while a single specimen works beautifully as a standalone feature in a container or central border position.

Best grown in a sunny, open site, it thrives with plenty of light, which enhances flowering and brings out the delicate colour transitions in the petals. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from good air circulation to maintain healthy growth and reliable repeat blooming.

As a standard rose, ‘Giallo Sfumato’ requires regular care, including feeding during the growing season, deadheading spent blooms, and annual pruning in late winter or early spring to maintain a balanced, rounded crown and encourage strong new growth.

Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Sheen' is an elegant, evergreen shrub admired in UK gardens for its light, airy appearance and refined foliage. A distinctive cultivar of Pittosporum tenuifolium, it forms a dense yet graceful plant, typically reaching 2–4 metres in height if left unpruned, though it can be easily maintained at a lower size through regular trimming.

Its most striking feature is its foliage. The leaves are small, narrow and slightly wavy, coloured a soft silvery-green that catches the light beautifully. Held on slender, dark brown to almost black stems, the foliage creates a subtle contrast that adds depth and texture. When planted en masse or used as a hedge, the overall effect is shimmering and delicate, lending movement and brightness to borders.

In late spring to early summer, small, dark purple flowers may appear, often hidden amongst the foliage. Though not particularly showy, they are lightly scented and can add a further layer of interest when viewed up close. However, the plant is primarily valued for its foliage rather than its blooms.

‘Silver Sheen’ thrives in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. In the UK, it performs best in milder regions or protected gardens, as hard frosts and cold, drying winds can damage young growth. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and low maintenance.

It is particularly well suited to contemporary planting schemes, coastal gardens in sheltered spots, or as a stylish alternative to traditional hedging plants. Regular light pruning will maintain a neat shape, while minimal intervention allows it to develop into a soft, architectural presence within the garden.

Euonymus alatus, commonly known as the Winged Spindle, is a deciduous shrub prized for its outstanding autumn colour. Through spring and summer the foliage remains a fresh mid-green, providing a dense, unremarkable backdrop, but from early autumn the leaves transform into vivid shades of crimson and scarlet, making this one of the most striking shrubs for seasonal interest. The common name derives from the distinctive corky, wing-like ridges that develop along the stems, giving the shrub year-round structural interest even once the leaves have fallen in winter. Small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers appear in late spring, followed in autumn by small purple-red fruits that split open to reveal bright orange seeds, adding a further decorative touch alongside the autumn foliage display. The shrub naturally forms a dense, rounded habit with horizontally spreading branches, making it useful as a specimen plant or informal hedge. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay and chalky conditions, and performs well in both sun and partial shade. Its adaptability and resilience make it a reliable choice for gardens seeking reliable autumn colour and structural form throughout the year.

Hydrangea Bonfire is a deciduous shrub with a compact, rounded, bushy habit, making it a useful choice for smaller garden spaces or mixed borders. The foliage consists of mid-green, ovate leaves that provide a solid backdrop throughout the growing season before taking on muted yellow tones in autumn. The flowers open creamy white before developing pink flushes as they mature, creating a two-tone effect on the shrub. Blooming continues over an extended period, with flower heads often persisting into autumn and providing colour well beyond the summer months. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, including bees, offering a nectar source during the summer flowering period and contributing to garden biodiversity. Hydrangea Bonfire performs well in partial shade, making it suitable for planting positions that do not receive full sun throughout the day. It is tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay and loamy soils, provided drainage is adequate. Regular moisture is beneficial, particularly during dry spells, as hydrangeas generally prefer soils that do not dry out completely. This makes it a practical option for borders with moisture-retentive soil conditions.

Carqueja 'Coral Wave' is an evergreen shrub prized for its unusual, almost leafless appearance. Instead of conventional foliage, it produces flattened, wing-like green stems, known as cladodes, which perform photosynthesis and give the plant a striking, undulating texture reminiscent of coral or seaweed. These segmented stems create a distinctive rippled, wave-like surface that remains a strong talking point throughout the year. The shrub has a low, spreading, mounding habit with gently arching stems, forming a loosely textured, medium-density structure that works well as a architectural ground cover or filler planting. Its sculptural form stands out in both contemporary and coastal-style garden designs, offering year-round visual interest rather than being tied to one particular season. In summer, small, inconspicuous flower heads appear along the margins of the cladodes. These are pale and understated rather than showy, but they do attract small pollinating insects such as bees, adding a modest but useful contribution to garden biodiversity. This plant is particularly well suited to coastal gardens, tolerating salt-laden winds and sandy, free-draining soils with ease. It also performs well in poor or dry soils where many other shrubs would struggle, making it a practical and resilient choice for low-maintenance planting schemes.
