Pittosporum 'Gold King' is an evergreen shrub valued for its bright, eye-catching foliage. The glossy leaves emerge lime-green and mature to a rich golden-yellow, with colouring most vivid when grown in full sun. New growth is carried on distinctive dark, almost black stems, which provide an attractive contrast against the gold leaves. The shrub has a naturally compact, bushy habit with dense growth, making it useful for structural planting or informal hedging. It responds well to trimming and holds its shape and density throughout the year, offering year-round interest thanks to its evergreen nature and consistent foliage colour. Small, bell-shaped, dark purple flowers may appear in late spring, though these are generally insignificant and often hidden among the foliage, so the plant is grown primarily for its leaf colour rather than for flowering display. This variety is well suited to coastal gardens, as it tolerates salt-laden winds and exposed conditions. It also performs well in sheltered, sunny borders where its golden foliage can be fully appreciated. Pittosporum 'Gold King' prefers well-drained soil and benefits from some protection from harsh, cold winds in colder inland areas, making it a versatile choice for mixed borders, screening, or specimen planting.

A dominant golden-yellow base speckled with vibrant orange, creating a fiery yet delicate appearance. The petals are velvety to the touch, arranged in a classic spiral formation that gently unfurls as the flower matures, revealing intricate layers that add depth and dimension to its beauty.

The long, slender stem is sturdy yet flexible, supporting the bloom with effortless poise. It is deep green in colour, adorned with a scattering of small, sharp thorns that serve as a natural defence mechanism. Along its length, glossy, dark green leaves emerge in an alternating pattern, their serrated edges and prominent veins adding to the plant’s overall texture and visual appeal.

The fragrance of the rose is subtly enchanting, carrying soft floral notes with a hint of citrus, complementing its warm, sun-kissed appearance. This particular variety thrives in well-drained soil and benefits from regular pruning to maintain its vitality and encourage repeated flowering. It flourishes in full sun, where its brilliant colours can truly shine, making it a stunning focal point in gardens or floral arrangements.

Magnolia 'Nigra', also known as purple-flowered magnolia, is a deciduous tree trained here as a quarter standard, giving it a clear stem before branching into a rounded, bushy head. The dark green leaves are broadly oval and provide a good backdrop to the flowers, turning a modest yellow-bronze before falling in autumn. Flowering occurs over an extended period from mid-spring through to late summer, with the main flush appearing before the leaves fully emerge and a secondary scattering continuing intermittently afterwards. The goblet-shaped blooms are a rich reddish-purple on the outside with a paler interior, appearing deeper in colour than many other magnolia cultivars. Each flower has a faint, sweet fragrance. This tree is particularly attractive during spring when the flowers are at their most abundant, creating a striking display before the foliage develops. The compact, quarter standard form makes it well suited to smaller gardens or as a specimen tree where space is limited, while still providing height and structure. Magnolia 'Nigra' prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and benefits from a sheltered position away from strong winds and late frosts, which can damage the early blooms. It performs well in partial shade as well as full sun.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Teddy Bear', commonly known as Hinoki Cypress, is an evergreen conifer with a naturally bushy, rounded habit. The foliage consists of dense, soft, dark green sprays arranged in a distinctive fan-like pattern, giving the plant a plush, tactile appearance that sets it apart from other conifer varieties. Its compact growth habit and tight branching create a dense, well-structured form that maintains its shape with minimal pruning, making it a popular choice for structural planting. This cultivar retains its rich green colouring throughout the year, providing consistent visual interest across all seasons rather than a single standout period. The density of the foliage offers some shelter for small garden birds, and like many conifers, it can provide a degree of protective cover within a planting scheme, contributing modestly to garden biodiversity. Hinoki Cypress 'Teddy Bear' is well suited to a range of garden situations, including use as a specimen plant, in containers, or as part of mixed borders. It tolerates a variety of soil types, including loamy and clay soils, provided drainage is reasonable, and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. Its slow growth rate and compact size make it particularly suitable for smaller gardens or spaces where a low-maintenance, year-round structural evergreen is required.

Helleborus 'Charmer', commonly known as the Lenten rose, is an evergreen perennial forming a low, clump-shaped mound of foliage. The leaves are leathery, dark green and deeply divided into serrated leaflets, providing structural interest throughout the year even when the plant is not in flower. Flowering occurs from late winter into early spring, with nodding, cup-shaped blooms held on sturdy stems above the foliage. The flowers are a soft pink shade, often with deeper pink veining and a pale centre, giving a delicate two-toned effect. Each bloom has a cluster of pale stamens at its centre, adding further contrast against the petals. This hellebore is particularly valuable in the garden during the colder months, bringing colour and interest to borders when little else is in flower. It performs well in shaded or partially shaded positions, making it a useful choice for woodland-style planting schemes or beneath deciduous trees and shrubs where sunlight is limited later in the year. The early flowers provide a nectar source for pollinators such as bees on mild winter and early spring days, when other food sources are scarce. This makes it a useful addition to gardens aiming to support early-emerging pollinating insects during a period of the year when floral resources are otherwise limited.

Laurustinus 'Eve Price' is an evergreen tree trained as a half standard, with a clear stem supporting a dense, rounded head of foliage. The dark green, glossy leaves provide year-round structure and remain attractive throughout the seasons. In winter, deep pink-red buds open to clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers tinged with pink, giving a long flowering period from late winter into spring. These are followed by small, dark blue-black oval fruits later in the year, adding further seasonal interest. The flowers are a valuable early nectar source for pollinating insects when few other plants are in bloom, while the dense evergreen canopy offers shelter and nesting opportunities for birds. This tree is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including exposure to coastal winds and salt-laden air, making it a reliable choice for coastal gardens. It also performs well in sun or partial shade and adapts to most well-drained soil types, including clay and loamy soils. As a half standard, it is well suited to formal planting schemes, border focal points, or underplanting with lower-growing shrubs and perennials, bringing structure and seasonal colour to a variety of garden settings.

The Indian Bean Tree is a deciduous tree with a bushy habit, forming a dense, rounded crown of branches. Its foliage consists of large, heart-shaped leaves that emerge pale green in spring and mature to a deeper green through summer, creating a lush, bold canopy. In summer, the tree produces showy clusters of white flowers, marked with yellow stripes and purple-brown spots in the throat, giving it a decorative appearance during the flowering period. These are followed later in the season by long, slender, bean-like seed pods that hang from the branches, adding further interest into autumn and often persisting into winter once the leaves have fallen. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, offering a nectar source during the summer months, while the dense branch structure can provide shelter for garden birds. This tree performs well in a range of soil types, including loamy and clay soils, and tolerates urban pollution, making it a suitable choice for town gardens as well as more open, rural settings. Its bushy form makes it a good option where a fuller, rounded shape is preferred over a more open or upright tree habit.

Its most striking feature is the spring foliage, which emerges a vivid shrimp-pink to salmon colour before maturing through pale yellow-green to a fresh green as the season progresses. This colour transition makes the tree particularly attractive in spring, when the new growth provides a strong contrast against darker garden planting. The feathered form gives the tree a dense, rounded habit with foliage held low, creating a compact and bushy appearance that is useful where a lower branching structure is desired rather than a clear stem. It is a slow-growing selection, making it suitable for smaller gardens where a more vigorous sycamore would be unsuitable. Small clusters of yellow-green flowers appear in spring, though these are not a significant ornamental feature. The tree tolerates exposed and coastal positions well, being resistant to salt-laden winds, and adapts to a wide range of soil types including clay. It is a hardy, low-maintenance choice valued primarily for its seasonal foliage colour and compact feathered form.
