Winged Spindle is a deciduous shrub grown chiefly for its exceptional autumn colour, when the foliage turns vivid shades of crimson and scarlet before falling. The dark green leaves are oval in shape, providing a fresh backdrop through spring and summer before their dramatic transformation. The stems are a notable feature of this shrub, developing distinctive corky, wing-like ridges along their length that give the plant its common name and add interest during the winter months once the leaves have dropped. In late spring, small greenish-yellow flowers appear, though these are inconspicuous and not the main ornamental feature. These are followed by small reddish-purple fruits that split open to reveal bright orange seeds, providing an additional point of interest in autumn alongside the striking leaf colour. The fruits are attractive to birds, who will feed on them once the seed capsules open. This shrub forms a dense, twiggy structure and responds well to pruning, making it suitable for hedging as well as specimen planting. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, and adapts well to both sunny and partially shaded positions, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings.
