Tilia cordata, or Small-Leaved Lime, is a large, dense, deciduous tree of pyramidal to rounded habit, with grooved, dark grey-brown bark and small, heart-shaped, glossy, dark green leaves, bluish underneath, yellow in autumn. Clusters of fragrant, creamy-white to yellow flowers bloom in early summer and are followed by small, round fruits. Attractive to birds and bees. Tilia cordata grows best in average, fertile, loamy, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade, but is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. It can withstand some drought and short floods. Resistant to frost, wind, and urban pollution. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning, but is tolerant of hard pruning. Small-Leaved Lime is a is an interesting and attractive tree, perfect as a free-standing specimen or shade tree in informal, cottage, wildlife, and urban gardens. Great for urban areas, avenues and broad streets. Suitable for informal hedges and screens.
