Transplanting mature pines is rarely successful. Pines have deep root systems which make them stable and drought-tolerant but, at the same time, it’s very difficult to move them once they are settled. So it important to plant them in the right spot that will allow them to grow to their mature size without obstacles.  On the other side, ground-planting pines are very resilient and can cope very well with extreme conditions, like summer heat or winter frost. Even in the most challenging parts of the UK, like northern regions, upland areas, and coastal regions, pines planted in the ground generally don’t have any problems. After they’re established, pines in the ground do not need much care. Watering is necessary during first few years and feeding requirement are minimal. Pines generally perform better without regular fertilizing.  Therefore, planting in the ground may be the best option if there is enough space for them to grow in their natural form, but if the space is the problem, it can grow equally well in containers. Growing Pines in Containers Growing pines in pots and containers is an excellent solution for gardeners with limited spaces. There is no reason not to enjoy beautiful pine trees on your balcony, patio or in a small garden. However, there are a few things that are important to consider before choosing container growing. When pines are grown in containers, their roots are restricted and their water and nutrients depend exclusively on you. So, make sure you are watering regularly, especially during dry UK spells. Containers and pots also dry more quickly than garden soil so mulching is recommended. Mulch will retain moisture, protect roots, and suppress weed. Not every pine variety can be grown in container so it’s important to use the right one. Dwarf and slow-growing pines are the best choice. Still, they have to be re-potted every few years to stay healthy and beautiful.  Containers can be an advantage in the UK climate. During harsh winters they can be moved to a more sheltered position or brought inside. If they stay outside, some winter protection is needed to protect the roots from freezing.  Containers are also practical if your garden soil is not suitable for growing pines. Ericaceous compost is a type of specialized compost that is formulated for plants that thrive in acid soils. The term "ericaceous" originates from the botanical family Ericaceae, which includes plants like rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and heathers, all of which prefer acidic growing conditions. Here's what you need to know about ericaceous compost: pH Level: The primary characteristic of ericaceous compost is its low pH level, usually within the range of 4.5 to 6.0. This makes it suitable for acid-loving plants. Content: Ericaceous compost typically doesn't contain any lime, which is often added to standard composts to raise the pH. Instead, it may contain ingredients like peat or coir, which are naturally acidic. Benefits: For plants that thrive in acidic soils, ericaceous compost provides the right pH environment for nutrient uptake. Many essential nutrients become less available to plants in alkaline conditions, so using the right type of compost is crucial for the health of these plants. Limitation: It's important to note that ericaceous compost isn't suitable for all plants. If used for plants that prefer neutral to alkaline soils, it can hinder their growth and overall health. Alternative to Peat: Due to environmental concerns related to the extraction of peat from peat bogs, there has been a push to use alternatives. Coir (coconut fiber) is one such alternative that's being used in some ericaceous composts. Other organic matter like composted bark or composted bracken can also be used. Regular Monitoring: If you're growing acid-loving plants in pots or containers, it's a good idea to periodically test the pH of the compost. Over time, the pH can change, especially if you're using tap water for irrigation, as it's often alkaline. If you're looking to grow acid-loving plants, using ericaceous compost is an excellent way to provide them with the best growing conditions, especially if your native soil isn't naturally acidic.

It has a pyramidal shape, with an eventual height of 5m. The leaves are deeply serrated around the edges. It can be pruned to keep its shape and height. Alternatively, it is an ideal choice to create an evergreen hedge. Hoheria sexstylosa ‘Snow White’ is classed as a reasonably hardy tree and should be able to withstand temperatures between -5 to -10. It will be happy in full sun in a good, well-drained soil. However, if you plant your tree in an exposed position or in adverse weather conditions it can get damaged. We would recommend providing shelter in cold areas.
