Ornamental trees for small gardens

The Acorus gramineus 'Hakuro Nishiki' is an attractive, low-growing ornamental plant valued in gardens for its striking variegated foliage and neat, grass-like appearance. Although often mistaken for a true grass, it is actually a member of the sweet flag family and is closely related to Acorus gramineus. This compact plant is particularly useful for adding colour and texture to damp garden areas, pond margins, or containers.

‘Hakuro Nishiki’ forms a small, clump-forming mound of slender, arching leaves that typically grows to around 20–30 cm in height, with a similar spread. The foliage is narrow and strap-like, creating a soft, fountain-shaped habit. What makes this variety especially appealing is its delicate cream, pale yellow, and green variegation, which gives the plant a light and fresh appearance. The variegated leaves can help brighten shaded corners of the garden and contrast beautifully with darker green plants.

This cultivar thrives in moist or damp soil and performs particularly well near water features, along pond edges, or in bog gardens. It can also be grown successfully in containers, provided the compost is kept consistently moist. While it prefers partial shade, it can tolerate full sun in cooler UK climates as long as the soil does not dry out. The plant is generally hardy across most parts of the UK, though some protection from harsh winter winds may help maintain its appearance.

Unlike many flowering garden plants, Acorus gramineus ‘Hakuro Nishiki’ is grown primarily for its foliage rather than its flowers. Any blooms that appear are small and rather inconspicuous.

Maintenance is minimal. Removing old or damaged leaves in spring helps keep the clump tidy and encourages fresh growth. Over time, the plant may also be divided to create new clumps. With its neat habit, elegant foliage, and tolerance of damp conditions, it is a versatile and attractive addition to many gardens.

These airy inflorescences rise well above the foliage, adding movement and height, and persist into winter, bringing seasonal interest and subtle texture even in dormant landscapes.

Unlike many grasses, 'Overdam' begins growth early in the season and remains tidy, making it ideal for formal borders, contemporary designs, or as a vertical accent in perennial beds. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil and is tolerant of urban conditions, wind, and clay soils. Low-maintenance and deer-resistant, it only requires a spring cutback to prepare for new growth. ‘Overdam’ is a versatile, elegant choice for adding structure, brightness, and year-round appeal to gardens.

From a cultivation perspective, Carex morrowii 'Moonlight' is low maintenance. It thrives in well-draining soil and, once established, is relatively drought-tolerant. While it flourishes in partial to full shade, it can tolerate some sunlight if provided with adequate moisture. It's often utilized in woodland gardens, borders, or containers for a touch of silvery elegance.

In the context of landscape design, this sedge is a versatile choice, pairing well with ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving perennials.

This intense blue colour is most prominent in the spring and early summer, adding a refreshing splash of colour to the landscape. As the seasons progress, the foliage maintains its appeal, though it may take on a slightly greener hue during the winter months.

In late spring to early summer, Festuca glauca 'Intense Blue' produces delicate flower spikes that rise above the foliage. These flowers start off a soft blue-green and mature to a light tan colour, adding a subtle ornamental element without detracting from the plant's overall blue theme. The flowers can be left in place for winter interest or cut back to maintain the plant's tidy appearance.

Blue Fescue is a hardy plant that thrives in well-drained soil and full sun. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it an ideal choice for low-maintenance gardens. It also works well in urban settings due to its tolerance of pollution and poor soil conditions. Regular trimming of the older foliage in early spring can help maintain the plant's tidy appearance and encourage new growth.
