Calycanthus ‘Venus’ is a striking deciduous shrub, often known as a sweetshrub or Carolina allspice, that brings abundant ornamental interest to a garden from late spring into summer. It’s a hybrid selection created from crosses involving several species of Calycanthus, resulting in larger, more dramatic flowers than many traditional varieties.

This shrub develops a rounded, multi-stemmed habit, typically growing to around 2–4 metres in height and spread under favourable conditions, though many garden forms remain more compact at around 1.5–2 metres. Its glossy, dark green leaves are broad and attractively shaped, turning yellow-brown in autumn before the plant drops them for winter.

The most remarkable feature of Calycanthus ‘Venus’ is its large, creamy-white flowers, which often have yellow and purple markings at their centres and a subtle but delightful fragrance. The blooms are sometimes described as magnolia-like in shape, appearing from late spring through much of the summer and sometimes intermittently into early autumn.

This shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil types — from clay to loam — provided it isn’t prone to prolonged waterlogging. Once established, it is relatively low-maintenance, benefiting from light pruning after flowering to tidy the plant and encourage new growth.

Calycanthus ‘Venus’ works beautifully as a specimen plant, at the back of mixed borders, or as part of a cottage-style or informal garden scheme. Its combination of ornate flowers, scent and autumn leaf colour makes it a rewarding choice for gardeners seeking both structure and seasonal interest.

Calycanthus × raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ is a spectacular deciduous shrub valued for its richly coloured flowers, attractive foliage and long season of interest in the garden. Sometimes known as a sweetshrub or Carolina allspice, this hybrid combines the best qualities of its parent species to create a bold but graceful presence in borders, woodland plantings or as a striking specimen.

In summer, Hartlage Wine produces an abundance of large, wine-red to burgundy-coloured flowers with a hint of cream at their centres. The blooms are often described as magnolia-like in form, lightly scented and carried along the length of the upright, arching branches from late spring into early autumn. These dramatic flowers stand out beautifully against the shrub’s glossy green, oval leaves, providing both colour and texture.

The foliage itself is deciduous, turning a buttery yellow in autumn before it drops, extending interest through the seasons and adding another layer of visual appeal. Mature plants can reach around 2.5–4 metres in height and spread over many years, though they can be kept smaller with careful pruning if space is limited.

Hartlage Wine thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil that is fertile and humus-rich. A sheltered position, away from cold, drying winds, will help it perform best in the UK climate. Once established, it remains relatively low-maintenance, though light pruning after flowering can help maintain a neat habit and encourage vigorous new growth.

Overall, Calycanthus × raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ is admired for its striking wine-red flowers, subtle fragrance and seasonal foliage colour. It makes a bold addition to mixed borders, a woodland planting scheme or as a focal shrub, blending dramatic floral display with reliable garden performance.

Camellia 'Doctor King' is a compact, bushy, evergreen shrub of upright habit, with broadly elliptic, glossy, dark green leaves and profusion of ruffled, single to semi-double, rosy-red flowers with yellow stamens in the centre, blooming from February to April.

Camellia 'Doctor King' prefers organically rich, slightly acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soils. The soil needs to be consistently moist, but too much water may lead to a root rot. It thrives in partial or dappled shade. Direct sunlight will burn its leaves and full shade may lead to thinner leaves and fewer blooms. It can withstand frost but needs to be sheltered from harsh, dry winds, as well as early morning sun. Late frosts may damage the flower buds. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require regular pruning.

Camellia 'Doctor King' is a wonderful, long-flowering, colourful, evergreen shrub perfect as an accent plant, great for mixed borders and shrub borders, and excellent for growing in pots and containers.

Camellia Happy Birthday is particularly well-suited for smaller gardens, borders, or container planting due to its tidy growth habit and moderate size. It thrives in a sheltered, partially shaded position, ideally protected from strong winds and morning sun, which can damage delicate blooms during frost.

Camellia Happy Birthday prefers acidic, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and benefits from mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular watering during dry periods and feeding with an acid-loving plant fertilizer will support healthy growth and flowering. With the right care and placement, it offers a reliable and elegant display, perfect for brightening up the garden during the colder months.

The flowers are long-lasting and hold their shape well, even in cool weather.

The foliage provides year-round interest.
